Did you know that in the popular song, “Georgia On My Mind,” “Georgia” was really a person? The original song by Hoagy Carmichael was indeed referring to a woman. However, when the state legislature heard Georgia-born Ray Charles sing his version in 1979, they immediately voted it the state song for Georgia. Ray Charles even gave a special performance of the song on the legislative floor the day the bill was passed. Many believed this act signified an important move away from racism and segregation in the south.
