In 2005, the laws regulating what constitutes a legal tax deduction when donating property changed significantly. Since 2005, IRS law in most cases only allows the donor to claim as a deduction the “gross selling price” of the donation (“Blue Book” valuations can no longer be used). The gross selling price is the selling price before any expenses are deducted. Therefore, it is essential that you use a donation service that will do whatever is economically feasible to maximize the selling price of your donated vehicle or boat donation.
Whenever economically beneficial, we will repair or “fix up” donations to increase their selling price. We will also strive to secure the highest sales price possible for your donation. Whenever possible, we sell in the retail market (not wholesale). When you donate a car or other property, we will accept nothing less than a fair and reasonable price for your donation. Our methods benefit both the charity and the donor.
Action also may, for qualifying “high value” donations, offer the possibility of a cash payment to the donor (partial cash payment—IRS “bargain sale”). Properly structured, a “bargain sale” can provide both some cash and a tax deduction for the donor. Call us for more information.
